3 Reasons & 4 Ways to Keep Reading

Hey LSS,

My personal wish for every Ladysmith student is that they could live in a house with a Beauty-and-the-Beast Level Library, stocked with enough books to last you until we can go back to the good ol’ days of me signing you out whatever library books your heart desires.

But if you’re anything like me, your house might be far from having Beauty-and-the-Beast Library Levels, so I’ve put together four ways to keep you reading while school and public libraries are closed - but I want to start with 3 reasons why reading is more important than ever right now:

  1. Reading builds empathy

Building empathy means building your ability to understand the feelings and experiences of other people. Reading books that tell the stories of other people, their feelings and experiences (whether real or fictitious) helps you do just that. Empathy = kindness, and more kindness definitely couldn’t hurt right now.

  2. Reading improves your writing

If you want to work on your literacy skills while you’re learning from home, there is no better way to do so than to READ. Reading helps you build and expand your vocabulary and exposes you to more complex sentence and language structures. Good writers use engaging, interesting language and can influence your writing skills for the better. The more you read = the better you write.

  3. Travel bans do NOT apply to books!

Last but not least - maybe you had to cancel spring break plans or maybe you’re just feeling cooped up at home - reading is the PERFECT way to go on an adventure and see the world. Try Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans, or Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins and you’ll feel like you’re right there in that Italian summer heat or unpacking for your study abroad semester in Paris.

So without further ado, LSS… (scroll down for active links below info graphic)

4 Ways to Keep Reading at Home

  1. LSS eBooks via Destiny Discover

Use your computer username & password to sign out eBooks from the LSS library. Don’t know your password? Email Mrs. Girard

  2. Vancouver Island Regional Library & the OverDrive app

Use the free OverDrive app to check out books from VIRL. Don’t have a library card? You can now apply for one online

  3. Audible Stories

Audiobooks free for students while COVID school closures are in effect. Truly, I cannot recommend a better audiobook listening experience than Harry Potter.

  4. Teen Book Cloud

Our own Mrs. Walker made an account for our school to access a massive collection of novels, graphic novels, videos and audiobooks at a variety of reading levels. Login: kwalker Password: login

I hope this helps you out, LSS family. If you have any questions about any of these apps, shoot me an email at allison.girard@sd68.bc.ca. Or if you use any of these apps and find a great book, I’d love to hear about it!

Happy Reading, LSS!

Mrs. Girard
